Society for Sustainable Urban Development (SSUD)

The Society for Sustainable Urban Development (SSUD) works to promote sustainable development in urban and peri-urban contexts by strengthening public awareness, encouraging sound planning and management practices, and fostering dialogue between citizens, institutions, and policymakers.

Promoted by the Nehru Foundation for Development, SSUD was registered in 2005 as a Society and a Public Charitable Trust. It serves as NFD’s primary institutional platform for engaging with emerging challenges related to urbanisation, mobility, coastal stewardship, and urban governance.

Vision and Purpose

SSUD envisions cities and towns that are environmentally responsible, socially inclusive, and governed through participatory and transparent processes. It believes that sustainable urban development requires informed citizens, responsive institutions, and evidence-based planning that balances environmental, social, and economic priorities.

Its work focuses on enabling constructive engagement between communities and decision-makers, while promoting practical solutions that improve urban liveability and resilience.

Areas of Work

SSUD works across themes such as sustainable urban planning, mobility, appropriate technologies, environmental education, and coastal and marine stewardship. Its programmes combine research, public engagement, policy support, and on-ground implementation to address complex urban challenges.

A key focus of SSUD’s work is building awareness and capacity among citizens, local authorities, and institutions to adopt sustainable practices in urban development and governance.

Blue Flag Programme in India

SSUD is the national implementing partner for the international Blue Flag programme in India. Through this role, SSUD supports the improvement of environmental standards, safety, accessibility, and sustainable management of beaches and coastal sites across the country.

Its work under the Blue Flag programme contributes to coastal conservation, responsible tourism, and community stewardship of coastal ecosystems.

Research and Collaborative Initiatives

In 2024–25, SSUD partnered with Parisar to undertake studies on mobility in the core city areas of Pune. This initiative aimed to strengthen evidence, inform public discourse, and lay the groundwork for participatory approaches to developing sustainable and inclusive mobility solutions. Such collaborations reflect SSUD’s emphasis on research-led action and stakeholder engagement as foundations for effective urban interventions.
